THE SELECTION

 

"... Still they stand here together, the man on the one side, his wife and the child on the other. And then, there are so many more, also elderly people, an old father and, opposite to him, the already shaky mother..

Brothers are standing here, looking for their beloved sisters. Nobody knows what will happen in a few moments. But everybody feels, that they will go through a selection ..."

"...Now the SS-doctor starts to divide the ones able to work from those supposed to be unable. Mothers with little kids are usually not able to work, but also everybody who seems to be ill or weak, who is not in good shape.

Wodden ladders are brought and raised on the rear of the trucks. All the selected people whom the SS-doctor has regarded as unable to work, have to climb on the truck. SS-guards count all who move up the ladder. Then they count the ones able to work who have to attend the march into the men's or women's camp..."

"... An SS-Officer stands in front of us. Obersturmführer. Is being addressed by a guard. Possibly doctor. Without white coat. Without stethoscope. In green uniform. With skull. We step forward one by one. His voice is calm. Almost too calm. He asks after age, profession, shape. Let us show our hands. I hear some answers. Locksmith - to the left. Administrator - to the right. Physician - to the left. Blue-collar worker - left. Warehousekeeper of the Bata company - right. (...) Joiner - left. Then it's up to my father. Unskilled laborer. He goes the same way as the administrator and the warehousekeper. He is fifty five years old. That could be the reason. Then it's my turn. Twenty three years old, healthy, road constuction worker. Horny skin on the hands. How good to have this horny skin. Left. ..."
